The Chocolate Wrapper - Event Report, Round 2

Dear All

Thank goodness for rainy days! The trails need a bit of moisture at the moment and it gives us an opportunity to send you, the competitors from Round 2 of the SRAM Singletrack Mind series, the 'Chocolate Wrapper' event wrap-up newsletter.

We're very pleased to say that Round 2 at Nowra has been hailed as a raging success, thanks to all that have sent kind words and we in turn would like to thank all the riders for the great vibe on and off track, our lovely service providers, the ADCC and most of all the hosting club SCUM who can be very proud their work and how they presented the course.

There were plenty of great stories from the day including the 11 Singlespeed solo nutters, the 28 hardmen of the Australian Defence Force championship, Joe's 2 cousins that he cajoled into entering their first ever mountain bike race (they loved it, despite the pain!) and the 2 recent mum's, Simone and Mel that dusted off the bikes and showed with their lap times that chasing rug rats must keep you fit!

Congratulations to all the category winners and place getters for their incredible efforts, and who walked away with well over $10,000 in cash and prizes from our fantastic sponsors SRAM, Brave Soldier, Avid, RockShox, Truvativ, Leyzne, NZO clothing, Hammer Nutrition, Cannondale, K-Lite Racing, Kenda, Deuter, Mountain Biking Australia and Muc-Off!

It’s not all about standing on the podium … a number of riders went home having won some great spot prizes from our generous sponsors during the day, and Matt Barr was the lucky winner of the Cannondale voucher worth $1500 and after a suspenseful wait while a dozen or so names were drawn from those who had already gone home, Phil Mawbey won the draw prize of a 2010 RockShox Reba Dual Air 100mm fork worth $900! As his current forks were spewing oil, he was stoked and said it couldn't have come at a better time.

Results, Photos & Reports

Results are up on the website, including the ADF and Singlespeed Special Category Champs overall results. We’ve also posted the current Series and Club point scores – don’t forget to nominate your MTBA Club when you enter!

Check out the hundreds of awesome photos taken by SCUM’s treasurer and photographer extraordinaire Kel Hockey on the event website ASAP! It's almost guaranteed that there will be a great shot of you and they're free to download!

If you’re keen to read a couple of riders’ perspectives on their day out on the bike, see Garry Milburn’s blog and Jamie Bailey’s event report on Enduro Pulse. If you have a blog with a report on the event that you’d like to share with us, please send through the details!

Event Crew

We'd like to take this opportunity to thank everybody who came to or assisted in the successful running of the event:

  • South Coast United Mountainbikers – Kel Hockey, Ian Whitton, Greg Lewis, Pete Windley, Russell, Duncan Miller, Pat Pavlich, and the rest of the dedicated crew from SCUM made Round 2 a fantastic experience. Aside from putting together an amazing track, they were happy to help with anything we needed and we’re proud to be members of this thriving club.
  • Riders – we’ve received so much positive feedback on the fun vibe and politeness of other riders, we’re totally stoked that you guys are doing your best to obey Rule # 31!
  • Volunteers – We couldn't have done this without our wonderful volunteers, including the marshals from the Rural Fire Service, registration crew and SCUM members. You're all awesome!
  • St John Ambulance – The St John Ambulance crew were kept reasonably busy on race day, treating 13 people and supplying band aids and ice packs to another 9. The worst of the injuries was a broken thumb, operated on yesterday, rendering Jayden Ward out of action for 6-8 weeks. We wish you a speedy recovery Jayden!
  • Shoalhaven Rodeo Association & Espresso Mobile Cafe – For providing great food and keeping us caffeinated throughout the day.
  • Mechanical Support – A huge thanks to SRAM tech support and Lifecycles for keeping everyones bike humming all day.
  • Castech Timing – for their state of the art, live to the web timing service. Don't forget to bookmark and send this link to your Mum http://onlineresults.com.au/ before you come to the next round with your internet enabled device.
  • The Australian Defence Cycle Club – Great to have you guys & girls along for the ride and we’re pleased you chose our event to be your 2010 Endurance Championship!

Didn't get enough of that sweet Nowra singletrack?

If you enjoyed your fix of Coondoo Road so much that you’re gagging for more, then don’t despair! Coming up on 18 July is the Shack Attack 6hr enduro. Last year’s inaugural event was a lot of fun and while the course route might look mighty similar to what you rode last weekend, it’ll actually be quite different as you’ll be riding it in reverse!

Putting our best foot forward …

Singletrack Mind Series Round 3, on 13 June, is at Yellomundee, legendary home track of Western Sydney MTB Club. It’s also the Clydesdale Special Category Championship for soloists – so if you and your bike weigh in at >100kg (male riders) and >85kg (female riders), don’t forget to select this as well as your regular solo entry!

adventure-medic-150Win an Adventure Medic 2-day First Aid Course worth $350! The crew from Adventure Medic will be in attendance at Yellomundee to look after any First Aid needs. They’ve very generously offered up a free 2-day course worth $350 which we will draw from all entries for Round 3 received by midnight on Friday 4 June! Joe just completed this course with them and can highly recommend it.

We’ve also been notified by Western Sydney MTB Club that car parking at Yellomundee will be limited, and strongly suggest that competitors car-pool where possible. Due to NPWS regulations, there is no event camping on site, so if you’re looking for somewhere to stay nearby please visit the Hawkesbury Tourism website.

mtnbikeHere’s a great alternative to driving your car – we are pleased to announce that mtnbike.com.au are offering their return transport service to Sydney riders for the June event at Yellomundee. mtnbike will depart from Bike Bug in North Sydney on Sunday 13 June (5.30am) and the cost for return transport is $35. Their trailer is set up to carry 15 lucky riders so act fast and get your spot sorted. Click here for more info and how to book.

That's it for this Chocolate Wrapper and again we'd like to thank everyone for contributing to the success of last weekend’s event. We look forward to seeing you all at Yellomundee next month!

Cheers

Joe & Fi
