Putting our best foot forward
Footprint: Chocolate Foot News, June 2012
It's been a busy time for the Choocy Foot crew since our last newsletter, the SRAM Singletrack Mind Series launched in a big way in Orange while our furry little friend the Rock Wallaby handed out pleasure and just a little bit of pain down Appin way.
Over in the UK, Fi's just completed a road trip around the trail centres of Scotland, where she also volunteered at the UCI World Cup at Fort William! Think pea soup fog, ankle deep mud, millions of midges, crowded accommodation ... all made up for by the opportunity to witness at close quarters the performance of the world's best downhillers, a list which we all know includes plenty of Aussie pinners. But the question is, who was Fi cheering for? After six months back in the UK now, was she gunning for Sam Hill or hoping for a Brit to win on home soil?! In the end the American, Aaron Gwin, was "Gwincredible" in the slippery conditions. Check out the Red Bull footage here.
A huge shout out to Orange bikes for the amazing Orange P7 Pro that's been Fi's faithful companion throughout the last few months. This bike has been the perfect weapon in the winter conditions and, now it's summer, it continues to perform well in the ever present mud and is equally awesome on the rare occasions that a dry trail is experienced!
We've got exciting plans for July when we'll be heading to the French Alps for a week's guided riding at 'Destination X' ... watch this space for stories of epic days and fantastic scenery!
See below for a bumper edition of Footprint, with lots of news from some of our fantastic sponsors including Hammer Nutrition's Endurance Nutrition Seminar presented by fuelling expert Steve Born ... read on!
2012 SRAM Singletrack Mind Series
Round 1, Kinross State Forest, 29 April
It seems an aeon ago that we headed to Orange for the first round of the 2012 Series. They must call it O-town because the singletrack is orgasmic! Orange really turned it on for the opening round of the SRAM Singletrack Mind Series. We're really happy to have included Orange in the Series and it seems you guys were too! We've had loads of positive feedback about the weekend and the trails, so thanks again to CWORBC and the great people of Orange. There's plenty of other good riding out that way too, so plan a weekend there soon. Read the full Chocolate Wrapper event report here.
Round 2 - East Kowen Forest, 24 June
Round 2 at East Kowen is shaping up to be huge! With a track of approx. 11.4km which includes some new trail, some favourites and some variation on some favourites not raced before. The Front Nine, Sideshow and a finishing flourish on Kowalski's Beer Garden will put a grin on your face before transition.
In between laps, we'll have a fantastic array of sponsor displays for you to visit. You'll be able to sample Hammer Nutrition products and Jimmy Jack Wines, check out the awesome designs from Cycology and Zerofive Custom Sportswear. Muc-Off will keep your drivetrains running sqeak-free, Giant will be displaying and offering demos of their bikes, and Mountain Biking Australia will have copies of their awesome publications for you to grab. SRAM will be there as always to help you out with any mechanical issues. And of course there'll be food & coffee available all day long! What more could you ask for? But wait, there IS more! We'll be giving away a SRAM RISE 40 wheelset worth $750 and a $1500 Giant voucher to some lucky people at Presentation (you've gotta be there though!).
Entries for Round 3 of the SRAM Singletrack Mind Series close at midnight on Wednesday so get organised and get entered! All the info is on the website.
Welcome to Frameskin
We'd like to welcome on board a new Series sponsor, Frameskin, whose product is 100% designed and made in the ACT. Frameskin has become a byword for frame protection - head to their website to check out these excellent products.
Rock Wallaby Enduro
We keep getting great feedback about the Rock Wallaby Enduro, while the little critter certainly has teeth, most rose to and enjoyed the challenge that Appin provides. We have a bunch of plans for next year 's Rock Wallaby which we can't wait to share with you later this year!
Since the race the traditional landowners asked our host club Wollongong MTB Club to refrain from using the track for events while they perform an environmental and legal assessment. WMBC is working with the Tharawal local land council, who are supportive of use of the track so a mutually beneficial outcome is anticipated shortly. Great news!
If you missed the race report it's here:, Dave Bateman's awesome photos are here, and there was a bunch of other photos all posted to our Facebook page so click here and click on the 'Like' button while you're there ;)

A new offering from Central Tablelands MTB Club is the Mid Winter's Night Screaming 4hr. It's cold and dark in the Rydal forest. Very cold. Very dark. And when the sun goes down things emerge ... hairy, scary things. They glide through the forest, sometimes silent, sometimes emitting eery sounds. Curses, unholy laughter, screeching, the whoop of the chase. They are shunned by decent society and called many names. Outcasts. Rebels. Maniacs. But they call themselves mountain bikers. Are you brave enough to join them? The Mid Winter's Night Screaming 4hr will take place on 14 July from 2.30-6.30pm on a fun little course similar to last year's Singletrack Mind Series 8hr. You'll get a couple of laps in daylight to sight the track before the darkness descends. http://ctmbc.net/node/36130
The 2012 Real Insurance NSW XC Series kicks off on 15 July at South Coast United Mountainbikers' fantastic Superbowl track and entries are now open. On 5 August the Series will head to Southern Highlands Cycle Club's Fitzroy Falls track, with Western Sydney MTB Club and Central Coast Ourimbah MTB hosting rounds later in the year. Check out the CycleNation website for all the info.
Central West Off Road Bicycle Club is part of the success story behind the the Back Yamma Bigfoot marathon event on 9 Sept in Central West NSW. The prizepool is looking fantastic with over $10K in prizes and giveaways. The competitor packs are also filling up with useful goodies. The crew have introduced new sections of singletrack, a few more features, and a changed the layout of last year's course making it a load more fun. New for 2012 is a pairs relay 100km, where riders each do 2 laps of the 25km loop - a great way to get into a 100km. Entries to open soon, more details at www.backyammabigfoot.com.au or find us on Facebook.

Menai MTB Park Update
At a recent meeting between MTB representatives, Council and ANSTO, the proposal for a MTB Park at Menai was accepted unopposed. Fantastic result for all the hard work by this MTB group over the past year, and they also received great support from the MTB community through emails to councillors, etc. The land remains closed in the meantime, so please do remain off the trails until further notice. Check out this newspaper story and you can also follow the progress via this Rotorburn thread.
Trail Building Career Opportunity
OK that might be stretching the truth a little, but The Australian Botanic Garden, Mount Annan, is currently advertising a position for 3 days per week in Horticultural Labouring. The position involves a fair amount of veg management in and around the bike trail and a bit of rock work/carpentry and trail building also. While obviously applicants need to have the appropriate qualifications/experience, having an interest in trail building would certainly be helpful. And lunchbreaks would never be dull again! Head to www.jobs.nsw.gov.au and enter 'Horticultural Labourer' into the keyword search to find all the details - applications close on 1 July.
As the cold weather descends there can be little doubt that motivation to get out on the bike can be a bit lacking but with two screamingly great events coming up and a ridiculous amount of prizes to be won or given away we trust that this should give you the nudge you need to put the leg warmers on and head out for a spin! Or you could just think of Fi trudging through endless mud and being eaten by midges, a little bit of cold doesn't seem so bad now eh!
We look forward to seeing you all at Canberra this weekend and after we get back from our Destination X adventure we'll be serving up the perennial favourite, Coodoo Rd at Nowra, on 19 August.
Joe & Fi
